Doctor Syntax wins MLA Prize for a Scholarly Edition!

January 14, 2026

Congratulations to the editors of The Tour of Doctor Syntax in Search of the Picturesque on winning the 2023-4 Modern Language Association Prize for a Scholarly Edition! Dr. Ben Wiebracht and sixteen students at Stanford Online High School collaborated on the book, which the MLA prize committee hailed as a “standout edition” that “redefines traditional expectations for an edition and its editors while advancing new forms of possibility and best practices for emerging scholar-practitioners.” See the full press release HERE.

Seven students were unable to attend the ceremony: Jacob Bryant, Ferris Haukom, Rathan Muruganantham, April Wen, Noelle Wu, Nicolás Zepeda.]

The award was presented to the editorial team on January 9 at the MLA Convention in Toronto. At the same convention, five of the student-editors—Aidan Bekendam, Edithe Lam, Sabine Mazzeo, Annika Ross, and Jiayun Zhang—presented on The Tour of Doctor Syntax at the poster session for undergraduate research. We at Pixelia applaud the whole team for their outstanding work, across multiple genres and forums, in bringing this forgotten Regency bestseller back to light!
