Letters from Women in the Roman World published!

May 23, 2026

Pixelia is excited to announce the publication of Letters from Women in the Roman World, the fifth and most ambitious volume in Pixelia's award-winning Experrecta series. This groundbreaking anthology brings together the epistolary work -- mostly in whole, occasionally excerpted -- of every woman known to have written a letter in the Latin language from the 2nd century BCE to the 5th century CE. The contents carry readers from a frontier fort in Britannia, to Spain, to Byzantium, to the Holy Land, to Rome itself, offering a series of keyhole views into the politics and history of the empire, as well as the daily lives of its inhabitants. The letters are given in the original Latin, with same-page vocabulary and commentary to aid Latin learners. Each of the fifteen authors is introduced with a substantial headnote so that readings appear alongside their biographical and historical context -- thus making it easier for teachers to pick and choose. A comprehensive general introduction, meanwhile, treats the overarching themes of the volume: the role of letter-writing in the Roman world; the complex status of literate women; and the often thorny work of ascertaining the authorship and authenticity of ancient texts.

The remarkable women in this anthology could only be done justice by a remarkable team of scholars. For this wonderful contribution to Latin studies, congratulations are due to Thomas Hendrickson and his student co-editors at Stanford Online High School: Mia Ella Antonio, Jillian Bross, Derin Goktepe, Christopher Jackson, Isobel Lewis, Wanzhi Li, Ines Mueller, Hannah Nakagome, Julian Schennach, and Piper Whittenburg.
