Congratulations to Anna Pisarello on winning the 2026 Ladislaus J. Bolchazy Pedagogy Book Award from the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS) for her Cicero: Pro Archia Poeta Oratio: A Tiered Latin Reader!
The Bolchazy Award is presented each year to a distinguished work primarily intended for the classroom in the field of classical studies. The criteria for this award include “appropriateness for the target audience; clarity of presentation; excellent quality; effective pedagogical practice and design; and potential for broad impact.”
Pisarello’s Pro Archia is a “tiered reader”: a new type of edition that seeks to help intermediate students read unadapted Latin by presenting each sentence of an ancient work along with several simplified versions, or “tiers.” For the editor of a tiered reader, the challenge is to create tiers of accurate and idiomatic Latin that help the student progress from the basic idea behind a sentence to its full complexity. The editor must therefore be particularly skilled both as a Latinist and as an educator.
In addition to the expertly constructed tiers, Pisarello’s edition stands out for its helpful introduction, which explains the pedagogical goals and methodology behind tiered readers.
