Publishing with Pixelia

We welcome proposals from scholar-educators interested in publishing with Pixelia, with the caveat that, as a small press with an all-volunteer staff, we can only handle a small number of projects at any given time. Proposals may be sent to editors@pixeliapublishing.org.

Our focus is on critical or student editions of literary and historical texts. Our core specialty is in the field of Latin, including medieval and neo-Latin. We have a secondary field in British literature. We will consider proposals beyond that purview, but we are best equipped at the moment to support projects in those subject areas.

Most of our books are created with an eye to classroom use—making neglected texts accessible to students and teachers—though we seek to serve scholars and general readers as well. The balance among those audiences will differ depending on the book. In designing your proposal, please explain your intended audience, and how the text itself and your editorial strategy would benefit that audience.

We are especially, and almost exclusively, interested in publishing books that arise from a collaboration between one or more experienced scholars and a group of students. In our experience, such projects result in publishable work only when the lead editor is closely involved. High-school and college students can do very impressive work, but it is unrealistic to expect them to create professional-grade scholarship on their own. Lead editors, then, should be prepared not only to supervise and guide student work, but to take on a great deal of the work themselves. It can be a heavy lift. Many of our projects begin in a college or advanced high-school class but then spill over into the summer or the next term. In your proposal, you would want to explain when and how the work will be completed, including in the (not unlikely) event that it remains unfinished after your students have moved on from your class.

We currently have two open series: the Experrecta series, which publishes the work of female Latin writers, and the Forgotten Contemporaries of Jane Austen series, which uses some of the minor writers of Austen’s day to shed light on her life and work. If you would like to propose an addition to one of these series, we recommend that you first familiarize yourself with their goals, purview, and format. Existing volumes can be downloaded for free from this website or purchased in hardcopy.

Thank you for your interest in publishing with Pixelia!
